He goes knock knock on my door and I pretend to be asleep till he gets right next to the bed." But what happens when one day that "knock knock" never comes? Knock Knock: My Dad's Dream for Me is a powerful story about the void left behind by a beloved parent. The narrator's father mysteriously disappears, leaving his son sad and confused, until a letter arrives in which his father expresses all of his wishes for his son. A powerful topic that is rarely explored in childrens' literature, Knock Knock: My Dad's Dream for Me should be an essential part of every teacher's toolbox, especially given its focus on an African American family. Why the narrator's father disappears remains a mystery, so teachers and children can fill in the blanks as necessary to help the child process losing a parent to jail, divorce, abandonment, or even death. The simplicity of the story packs a powerful punch, and would help many children who find themselves in a similar situation.
