2007, Written by Sherman Alexie, Illustrated by Ellen Forney National Book Award (2007), Odyssey Award (2009), American Indian Library Association Award 14 year old Junior, born with brain damage, has dreams—he just isn't sure what they are yet. And despite his loving (but dysfunctional) family, his supportive (but troubled) best friend, and his insightful drawings, Junior realizes that staying on "the rez," the Spokane Indian Reservation, will not help him fulfill those dreams. Knowing that his best chance of a good education lies elsewhere, Junior leaves the reservation's high school and transfers to the neighboring white school 32 miles away.
